BYD and UPA install 500 kWh energy storage

China’s BYD and Utility Partners of America (UPA) of Greenville, South Carolina, have installed a rechargeable energy storage unit consisting of a 500 KWh iron phosphate battery and a 200kW bi-directional inverter in South Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. The primary purpose of the unit will be to balance fluctuations in electricity generation from renewable energy sources, says a report on the Solar Server website.

The BYD batteries have the advantage that they contain no heavy metals or toxic electrolytes and can be cycled more than 6,000 times, over a period of 25 years.
