ES development too slow for PV?

A gloomy report from RECHARGE cites several PV bigwigs who warn that ES is developing way too slowly to be used viably in combination with solar to take on conventional electricity generation. In the article, a VP at EDF Energies Nouvelles goes as far as to say that the cost of storing dispatchable electricity needs to go down to 25% of its current cost before PV using ES can match competing, non-green energy on price.

If this is the case, the article argues, the PV industry will need to deal realistically with the one non-renewable sector with which it does not have an irreconcilable difference – natural gas. What’s your opinion? When do you think ES will be cheap enough to come to the rescue of renewables?
